PUBLIC SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK
STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1030 AM CDT SUNDAY MAY 31 1998

...AN OUTBREAK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH...DAMAGING WINDS... LARGE HAIL...AND A FEW TORNADOES IS EXPECTED OVER PARTS OF THE EASTERN GREAT LAKES INTO SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND TODAY AND EARLY TONIGHT...

THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER IN NORMAN OKLAHOMA IS FORECASTING AN OUTBREAK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH VERY DAMAGING WINDS... LARGE HAIL...AND A FEW TORNADOES FOR PARTS OF THE EASTERN GREAT LAKES AND SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND.

THE AREAS MOST LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE THIS ACTIVITY INCLUDE: MUCH OF NEW YORK...CENTRAL AND NORTHERN PENNSYLVANIA...NORTHERN NEW JERSEY...AND WESTERN PORTIONS OF VERMONT AND MASSACHUSETTS.

A SURFACE LOW OVER SOUTHERN ONTARIO IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE DEEPENING AS IT MOVES RAPIDLY INTO SOUTHERN QUEBEC DURING THE DAY. STRONG SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS AHEAD OF THE LOW WILL BRING VERY MOIST AND UNSTABLE AIR ACROSS MUCH OF THE EASTERN GREAT LAKES INTO WESTERN NEW ENGLAND.

WITH THE LOW CONTINUING TO INTENSIFY...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACCOMPANIED BY VERY DAMAGING WINDS AND POSSIBLY TORNADOES WILL SPREAD ACROSS NEW YORK AND PENNSYLVANIA EARLY THIS AFTERNOON. AS THE DAYTIME HEATING DESTABILIZES THE AIRMASS FURTHER...SEVERE STORMS WILL BECOME EVEN MORE WIDESPREAD...WITH THE ACTIVITY MOVING ACROSS ALL OF NEW ENGLAND BY THIS EVENING.

ALSO...DURING THE AFTERNOON SEVERE STORMS WILL RAPIDLY DEVELOP AHEAD OF THE TRAILING COLD FRONT ACROSS THE OHIO VALLEY WHERE THE AIRMASS WILL BE VERY WARM AND UNSTABLE.

THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS WEATHER SITUATION. PEOPLE IN THE THREATENED AREAS ARE URGED TO REVIEW SEVERE WEATHER SAFETY RULES... AND LISTEN TO RADIO...TV...OR NOAA WEATHER RADIO FOR LATER WATCHES ...WARNINGS...AND STATEMENTS.
